The Detroit Fan

The Detroit Fan
I was recently on vacation where I was surrounded by sand, a warm salty breeze and an ever so lingering scent of coconut. It was fabulous in every sense of the way because when you’re on vacation typically the main objective is to forget. Forget about responsibilities, duties, worrisome tendencies and life in general… which is exactly what I did. It’s amazing how the brain works when it’s given the opportunity to let go of the unconscious responsibilities, it leaves more time for thoughts to wander.

During one of the periods of wandering thoughts a recent Woodward Ave. storefront quote came to mind, “Everything will be alright, Detroit.” This is when I really became lost in thought, because I began to think of those who have passions and desires to see Detroit stand tall as it once did, those who have no fear in smiling at that window understanding just how true the statement is. Then I started to think, who is this person? Who is the Detroit Fan?

I’m sure if you were to ask someone who they think a Detroit Fan is, certain feline descendants representing the stellar athleticism of modern society are the first to mind. Sporting aficionados supporting the Detroit Lions, Tigers and Red Wings typically comprise the image of the Detroit fan, but sports are not what make this person tick.

The Detroit Fan knows the meaning of loss all to well. Recent downtrodden times in the city elicit a feeling of angst that may seem impossible to drudge through. In a place where it’s easier to give up and change directions, this person reaches deep for that spark because they know everything will be alright. It comes down to living in the moment, enjoying the moment and really embracing everything that moment has to offer. The Detroit Fan is one who does in fact live for the moment because they understand there is no need to stress about the future, no need to stress about what hasn’t happened yet.

The Detroit Fan is someone who leaves the city but carries with them a sense of pride knowing the time away from their beloved home is only limited. When asked where they hail from instead of saying Michigan they say “I’m from Detroit” and no matter the reaction they say “Detroit” with a straight spine and a smile. Their pride and passion shine through the harsh rumors and negative media because at a moment’s notice the Detroit Fan is ready to list of the top 10 reasons why life in this city is irreplaceable. Of course it has its problems but when the Detroit Fan asks the inquirer to name a city that’s perfect, they have no rebuttal. The Detroit Fan rises above the bullying because they know the world will look up to them someday.

Humble. The Detroit Fan is humble and ready to embrace skeptics at the drop of a hat. Their enthusiasm for the city is too great for one person to hold so the opportunity to share that enthusiasm is welcomed with open arms. They don’t judge because they know what it feels like, they don’t criticize because they live through criticism almost every day. Rather they are accepting and honest, life’s too short to live in a place that’s full of lies and deception. Plus dishonesty is exhausting and sleep is usually last on the Detroit Fan’s priority list.

The Detroit Fan is an eternal optimist. Instead of only seeing what’s wrong with the city, their energy is 100% focused on what’s right in the city. They know Detroit’s wounds are deep but they are healing, each day something is mended and it’s worth praising. So the Detroit Fan touts the good and touts the life-size Band-Aids that are mending the city’s foundation.

Every day this person understands Detroit is making progress, no such thing as taking a step back and the glass is always completely full.

Do you see yourself in this description? If so, welcome to the club. Love Always, Detroit.
