| Spirit Of Detroit |
When you think of change it’s normally centered on something
being different right? This is my perspective when looking at the city, it’s
constantly changing. When you come from a small town change is something that
tends to make you a little apprehensive mainly from the limited change
opportunity in rural locations. This is something I’ve overwhelmingly embraced
during my time living in Detroit
because it’s happening each time I step outside. Change is becoming a normality
in Detroit from
new businesses to uplifting attitudes to energy, it’s simply invigorating and
nothing short of remarkable. A city that was once thriving went into remission
for a short stint is reemerging to flourish once again thanks to change from
open minds.
Detroit
is expanding and continues to develop in a way unique and unheard of in most
large cities. I believe this growth stems from the people, those that believe
enough to watch and contribute to Detroit
reigniting into the powerhouse it once was known to be. Do we fear growth? To a
point, yes, growth brings uncertainty and this is something the city has been
faced with a number of times. But to play it safe only opens us up to
disappointment knowing we could have grown that much more if we were to push
the envelope just a bit further.

As a result of change and growth comes Detroit’s progress. We’ve come a long way in
just a short period of time, against the odds. One stride at a time, the hole
the media has put Detroit
in is getting smaller and smaller, because we’re climbing out. In my opinion Detroit has taken great
strides in moving forward which is, for the most part, the definition of
progress. Businesses and city dwellers are moving TO the city and, to support
progress, they are staying. In fact, the largest hurdle people have been faced
with is the inevitable wait list which is not exactly a bad problem to have.
Major steps have been taken to improve the life of the city
however it is difficult to see from the outside looking in. The news and media
tend to focus mainly on the negative aspects of events taking place and only
momentarily focus on the positive. I challenge you to disregard everything you
hear, good or bad, and pay Detroit a visit to experience the city for yourself…
make your own headline in the story of your life based on factual, real time
experiences from the inside looking out. Love Always, Detroit.
I am glad that you have such a passion for Detroit. I only hope that Detroit can come back and be better that it has ever been. There is so many great things about Detroit. I hope that we can all love this city. Great post.
ReplyDeleteI'm an optimist so I really do believe the future holds nothing but greatness for this city.
DeleteWhat has always amazed me about Detroit is how beautiful the downtown part of the city really is. Campus Martius looks like a futuristic city, the Ren Cen practically has an entire mall and shopping center inside of it, and the various sculptures within the city (the fist of Joe Louis, the Spirit of Detroit) bring life into our town. Detroit is awesome!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the positive shout out Joshua! Beauty is only the beginning!
DeleteI was recently in GreekTown last weekend and Detroit is actually a fun city. I feel as though it's more of a safety issue rather than finding something to do. I hear that there are so many great restaurants, things to do, and places to see. I want to experience it all, but you have to be careful especially at night. My family lives in Seattle and when I was out there this past summer with my boyfriend, we walked and walked day or night without having to really worry. I hope that Detroit can get there someday.
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole-
DeleteI’m glad you were recently down here and had a good time! I completely understand your concern with safety because the media has really put the city in a bad light. The way I translate their city coverage is that after dark Detroit turns into a zombieland. I’d like to challenge this view in every sense of the word because I’ve lived here for a few years now and have never been concerned for my safety… even after the sun goes down. I encourage you to read one of my previous blog posts that does into detail about common Detroit misconceptions: http://bit.ly/1e05nWl Let me know your thoughts!
